12 Volt Cooking Guide

12 Volt Cooking Appliances: Stoves, Lunch Box Ovens, Slow Cookers and Pans

A hot meal on the road without a truck stop: 12-volt cooking appliances plug into a vehicle’s power socket and cook or reheat food while you drive or park. They are slower than a kitchen, because a power socket delivers about a tenth of a household microwave’s power, but a stove, a heated lunch box or a slow cooker turns a long day’s driving into a real meal. Here is what each type does well, what it draws, and what works on a 24-volt truck.

In this article
  • Heated lunch boxes reheat a packed or frozen meal hands-free; a 12-volt stove or slow cooker can cook from scratch
  • Most draw 8 to 13 amps — check that your power socket is fused for at least that, and plug in directly rather than through a splitter
  • For anything more than reheating, run the engine: an hour of cooking can take 8 to 13 amp-hours from the battery
  • On a 24-volt truck, choose a 12/24-volt model such as the Aotto or Buddew lunch boxes, or use the truck’s 12-volt socket

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I plug a 12-volt cooker into any power socket?

Only if the socket is fused for the current the cooker draws. Many vehicle sockets are fused at 15 or 20 amps, but some are 10 amps — your owner’s manual or fuse box lid will say. A cooker drawing 12 or 13 amps will blow a 10-amp fuse. Plug in directly: splitters, thin extension cords and worn sockets can overheat at these currents, and a loose plug is the most common reason a 12-volt cooker struggles to heat.

Will a 12-volt cooker drain my battery?

It can. A cooker drawing 12 amps uses 12 amp-hours an hour, and a vehicle’s starting battery is not designed for deep draining. A short reheat with the engine off is usually fine; for longer cooking, run the engine or, in an RV or truck with a house battery, cook from that. Unplug when you are done — some sockets stay live with the ignition off.

How long does 12-volt cooking take?

Longer than at home. The Buddew lunch box warms a meal in about 15 to 30 minutes and the HOTLOGIC Mini cooks or reheats in about an hour; refrigerated or frozen food takes longer. A slow cooker is meant to run for hours. The trick is to start early — plug in an hour before you stop to eat.

My truck is 24 volts — what can I use?

The Aotto portable oven and the Buddew lunch box both come with a 12/24-volt car cord, so they plug straight into a 24-volt socket. The other appliances here are 12-volt only: use them on the truck’s 12-volt socket if it has one (many trucks do, through a built-in converter), or add a 24-to-12-volt voltage converter sized for the appliance’s current.

Is there a 12-volt microwave?

Not a true one — a power socket cannot supply the 1,000 watts or more a microwave needs. Products sold as “12-volt microwaves” are heated lunch boxes like the ones above. To run a real microwave you need an inverter wired directly to the battery; our 12-volt microwave guide explains how.

Can I use a regular kettle or coffee maker on the road?

Yes, through an inverter wired to the battery, not a power socket. A travel kettle such as the Brentwood 800-watt collapsible kettle draws about 80 amps at 12 volts, so it needs a 1,000-watt inverter and the engine running. Our 1,000-watt inverters compared guide and the inverter calculator help you size the setup.

Conclusion

Bottom line

To reheat a packed meal hands-free, a heated lunch box is the easy choice: the Buddew is quickest, the Aotto takes your own dishes, and both run on 24-volt trucks; the HOTLOGIC Mini cooks a frozen meal while you drive. To cook from scratch, the TRAVEL TIME stove, the RoadPro slow cooker and the RoadPro frying pan and saucepan do the job on 12 volts. Whatever you choose, check the socket’s fuse rating and run the engine for anything longer than a reheat.
